Introduction - Journey Through Rutherford Beach History

Updated: Oct 16, 2019

My name is Bobby Miller. I have been interested in the history of Rutherford Beach for quite some time and I believe this blog provides the perfect avenue to bring bits and pieces of information together in one place. I start this project fully expecting it to take months to complete. I plan to include information from various sources, including:

1. General information available online, such as "Oak Grove Community, Cameron Parish History, Louisiana" by Kathy Lacombe - Tell.

2. Articles and pictures from the Cameron Parish Pilot archives, with the blessing of owner Jeffra Wise DeViney.

3. Conversations with local old-timers. For example, several locals have shared stories of riding their horses through the marsh to get to the beach before Rutherford Beach Road was built.

4. Firsthand experience starting in June 2008.

I am very excited about this project and look forward to learning more about Rutherford Beach and meeting new people along the way.

About The Author

I was born and raised in northeast Texas but I have spent at least half of my adult life in Louisiana. Long story short, my mother was from northeast Texas and my father was "thought to be" from south Louisiana. I can't help but wonder if that is why I am drawn to Cameron Parish.

My wife Nelwyn spent many fun weekends at Rutherford Beach before the two of us met. My first and only pre-Rita trip was Memorial Weekend, 2005. Nelwyn and I bought property at Rutherford Beach in 2008. We absolutely love the beach and routinely participate in beach sweeps and community events.

We currently reside in Branch, Acadia Parish, LA where our granddaughter attends school and which is close to my workplace. We plan to one day retire to Rutherford Beach, with the comfortable understanding that God may have different plans.
